How do speed cameras identify you?

How do speed cameras identify you as a driver? The cameras run on software called Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) which reads the number plate of the vehicle. The camera scans the number plates and are also able to obtain an image of the driver to record who is driving at the time. The system uses infrared lighting which enables an image to be taken regardless of weather condition or time of day. The software that is used does tend to be region specific to deal with the variations of the plates. The software used runs in conjunction with local and national databases to help identify the driver. Once the image has been taken the software manipulates the image to enhance the quality to make the characters clearer.
